OLALLA — Al’s Market can resume fuel sales because the business now complies with underground storage tank leak detection and overfill prevention required by state law.

The state Department of Ecology (Ecology) has removed a “delivery prohibition” issued in March to  Al’s Market, also known as Olalla Public Store, at 13965 Crescent Valley Road SE.

The 12,000-gallon tank — divided into regular and premium compartments — is only a few yards from the shoreline at the mouth of Olalla Creek.

Ecology inspected Al’s Market in October and November of 2012, issuing three penalties, one for $100 and two for $400 — all since paid — for various violations.

A red tag was affixed to the tank’s fill port to inform fuel truck operators of the delivery prohibition.

Al’s Market has documented to Ecology that it meets all underground storage tank requirements and will undergo an Ecology inspection in the near future.

Washington’s underground storage tank law and Ecology’s inspection program protect against leaks by requiring owners and operators to maintain underground fuel tanks and related piping and equipment, to operate monitoring systems, provide financial cleanup responsibility, and to take other protective measures.
