Washington State Patrol (WSP) detectives arrested a 27-year-old Olympia man late Friday afternoon in connection with the fatal hit and run that killed a former Bremerton man early that morning.

Louis M. Stevens, 23, formerly of Bremerton, was walking in a lane on northbound Highway 3 just south of Shelton when a vehicle struck him from behind shortly before 2 a.m. The vehicle fled the scene.

WSP Trooper Krista Hedstrom said Stevens recently moved to Mason County from Bremerton.

Detectives received a tip Friday afternoon that led them to the Olympia man, according to WSP. While detectives continued searching for the suspect, they learned he was involved in a separate collision on State Route 101 near Purdy Cutoff Road at 2:18 p.m. Friday. The man was transported to Mason General Hospital for minor injuries he received in the collision, according to WSP. After being medically cleared, troopers took the man to the Mason County Jail where he was booked on charges of vehicular assault and felony hit and run.

Detectives believe alcohol played a factor in the hit-and-run collision that killed Stevens, according to WSP. Evidence taken from the scene of the early morning collision is consistent with evidence found on the man’s truck, a silver 2000 Toyota Tacoma.
