Olympic Property Group plans to log a 150-acre site near Hansville, according to OPG spokesperson Elizabeth Wilson.
The area, known locally as the old Hansville nursery, had been used by a farm that has ceased operation.
She told members of the Greater Hansville Area Advisory Committee on June 9 that OPG was looking at several alternative uses of the land, including its possible sale either in total or in 20-acre parcels, but in the interim has applied for a Class Four logging permit.
Wilson said OPG would prefer to use the land in an agricultural capacity if it is retained.
OPG plans to keep 100-foot buffers around all sides of the area and will log 70 percent of the area by volume.
Logging is expected to begin “around the first of July,” said Wilson.
Residents in the Driftwood Keys area are worried about impacts when the logging trucks use Ponderosa, Hood Canal Drive and Twin Spits Road as the access route out of the site.
“There are the common concerns about traffic, noise and pollution, of course, but school will be out and there will be a lot of children playing in the area. I guess the biggest concern is their safety,” said local resident Jack Harrington.
According to county planner Steve Heacock, who oversaw the State Environmental Policy Act review for the county, the number of actual truck trips would be relatively minimal because only the perimeter of the site has usable timber.
The majority of the site were fields used by the agricultural tenant.
The Department of Natural Resources assumes jurisdiction for the permit – including when OPG can haul and cut – now that the SEPA review has been approved.
