KINGSTON – A Hansville man was flown to the regional trauma center and a teen boy was taken to a local hospital after their midsized pickup truck left the roadway and struck a tree on Jefferson Point Road Aug. 1. 

North Kitsap Fire & Rescue crews were called to the scene just before 4 p.m. The first units to arrive on the scene found the adult male passenger in the care of an off-duty firefighter outside the truck while the teen driver remained inside. The truck’s front end and driver’s door sustained the most severe damage; the tree drove the hood and bumper back toward the passenger compartment as much as two feet, department spokeswoman Michele Laboda reported.

Both airbags had deployed. Light smoke was coming from the engine compartment so firefighters, in addition to caring for the two patients, used tools to pop open the hood to extinguish any fire. There were no flames.

The paramedic on scene called for an Airlift Northwest helicopter to rendezvous with them at Wolfle Elementary School to fly the man to Seattle’s Harborview Medical Center with potentially life-threatening injuries. It is unknown if the man had been wearing a seatbelt when the crash occurred, Laboda reported. The teen was wearing a seatbelt; he was taken by aid crews as a precaution to Harrison Hospital in Bremerton.

Jefferson Point Road was closed for nearly 45 minutes while crews worked.

The Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the cause of the crash.
