“One Book, One Community” features jazz era | Check It Out | October

Please come to an open house at the Kingston Library at 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 4. We will be discussing the upcoming levy and answering any questions.

The start of October means it’s time for One Book, One Community. This year, we have selected “The Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet,” by Jamie Ford. The story is set in Seattle in the 1940s and touches on war, jazz, friendship and innocent love.

Most Kingston events will be on Tuesdays, with a few exceptions. On at 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 5, we will have Bradford Spurr give a talk about the jazz performed at Seattle nightclubs during the era of the book and offering swing dance instruction. Come and learn some steps.

Our morning book group will be discussing the novel on at 10 a.m. on Oct. 6.

Craig Smith has once again generously offered to show films echoing the book’s themes at the Firehouse Theatre. The theater will show “Snow Falling on Cedars” at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 12.

“The Karate Kid” will play at 11 a.m. Oct. 16. Both films will be free, so support the theater and buy lots of refreshments.

We will be doing oral history interviews Oct. 19, with people who have memories of Kitsap County in the 1940s — of immigrating here, or stories of living in two cultures. If you or someone you know can share memories please call us at (360) 297-3330. One copy of the final interview will go into our library collection and the second will be given to the interviewee.

Island Theatre will perform the play, “The Immigrant,” by Mark Harelik, for us on at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 26. Finally, we will host the pictorial history exhibit, “Kodomo No Tame Ni: For the Sake of the Children,” during the week of Oct. 30 through Nov. 5.

Kitsap Regional Library is closed on Oct. 11, for system-wide staff training. Friends of the Library will meet at 10 a.m. Oct. 12, to plan a big book sale for Nov. 6. The Classic Book group meets 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 18 to discuss the “Severed Head” by Iris Murdoch.

Please remember to vote in the upcoming election. It is our privilege and our right.

Check it Out!
