Travelers who use the Highway 104 Hood Canal Bridge should prepare for a series of overnight closures in May and June as construction resumes.
The bridge will close between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. most weeknights over a four-week period, a Department of Transportation news release states. The closure dates are: May 13-18; May 20-23; May 28-31; June 3-8 and June 10. Work is weather-dependent and could be rescheduled. Real-time information is available via the WSDOT Hood Canal Bridge web page and the WSDOT app.
“The bridge sits in a salty, corrosive environment and needs continual maintenance and construction. Crews working for WSDOT are refurbishing critical elements at the center of the bridge. This project is necessary to ensure the bridge can continue to operate, serving both vehicle and marine traffic,” the release says.
The bridge will not be open for any traffic, including emergency response, per the release. During the seven-hour closures construction crews will replace worn shock absorbers that help keep both halves of the span connected.
In addition to the overnight work, crews will also work during the day to replace the center locks that hold the bridge together. However, that work can be done with the bridge open to traffic as it only requires up to 40-minute test openings, per the release. The test openings are scheduled for sometime between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. May 6-7, May 24, May 28-29 and June 14.
The work is the final phase of the bridge’s Center Lock Rehabilitation project.
