POULSBO — Pearson and Poulsbo elementary staff and students have something to celebrate.

According to the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction, the two schools are among the best in student achievement progress.

Both schools earned a “High-progress school” award from OSPI this year.

To earn the accolade, Pearson and Poulsbo were among the best in the top 10 percent of Title 1 schools in Washington in reading and math for three years. Students were assessed using the Adequate Yearly Progress tests.

Title 1 schools are those designated with a high number or percentage of children from low-income families.

A total of 92 schools were in the pool for being a “High-progress school.” Out of those 92, 48 elementary schools and two high schools took the award.

“It is really something to celebrate,” said Kristen Jaudon, OSPI communications specialist.

Students’ progress was analyzed between the 2008 and 2011 school years.

Because the Adequate Yearly Progress tests are no longer being used in Washington, the awards will be the last given using those standards. Jaudon said new standards will be based off the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, once those are in place in 2014.
