LITTLE BOSTON — Peyton Watland, 10, a Port Gamble S’Klallam tribal member, won the 2013 S’Klallam Days Talent Show, Sept. 14 in the longhouse in Little Boston.

Peyton, a fourth-grader at Pearson Elementary School, more than impressed the judges with her performance of “The Great Escape,” by Pink. She exhibited great range and maturity, singing with seeming understanding of the lyrics: “I won’t let you make the great escape / I’m never gonna watch you checkin’ out of this place / I’m not gonna lose you / ‘Cause the passion and the pain / Are gonna keep you alive someday.”

Nizhoni Price won second place for her performance of “The Cup Song” — a folk-pop combination of the old Carter Family song, “When I’m Gone,” and the Cup game; the song was popularized this year by the singer-actor Anna Kendrick.

Angel Ives, the only adult to place, won third place for her soulful performance of Alannah Myles’ 1990 Grammy award-winning hit, “Black Velvet.”

Other competitors: Harmony Tyson, who sang Alicia Keys’ “This Girl is On Fire”; Bethany Swift, Harmony’s mother, who sang a song by Adele; and modern dancer Jayla Moon.

The winners received VISA gift cards; the others received participation prizes.
