Pianist relives romantic era

Kitsap Music Teachers Association presents pianist Wayne Johnson, who will play "Salon Classics."

POULSBO — Piano favorites will take center stage at the North Kitsap Community Center Auditorium in Poulsbo next week as the Kitsap Music Teachers Association presents “Salon Classics.”

Exploring the “Golden Age” of the piano will be famous ivory tickler Dr. Wayne Johnson, who will play a number of concertos and sonatas from many of the world’s lesser-known composers. The concert, scheduled for Friday, Feb. 8, at 7:30 p.m., will showcase tunes that gained their popularity in the glittering salons of Europe and in the parlors of America.

From the foot tapping rhythms of Gottschalk’s “The Banjo” to the lush harmonies of Godowsky’s “Old Vienna,” Johnson will re-create the nostalgic charm of music intended for the intimacy of the salon setting. Salon Classics from the Golden Age of the Piano features several neglected gems and “period lollipops,” as well as a number of familiar masterpieces.

Johnson has appeared as soloist and chamber musician throughout the United States, and has performed in Canada, Europe and South America. In the early 1970s, he was the featured piano soloist with the famed United States Army Field Band. Since moving to the west coast, he has performed and toured regularly as recitalist and lecturer in both community and university arts events. Collaborating with the principal string players of the Seattle Symphony Orchestra, Dr. Johnson performed at the Seattle’s Fifth Avenue and Moore Theaters and in numerous other concerts throughout the Pacific Northwest. Appearances as orchestral soloist and accompanist augment his duties as Professor of Piano and Music History and chairman of the keyboard studies program at Seattle Pacific University. Wayne holds the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in piano performance from the Cincinnati College, Conservatory of Music.
