The Kingston Rotary Charity Golf Challenge will be back for its fifth year this June. Verizon Wireless has committed to a major contribution for the Kingston Rotary Club entitling them to the tournament naming rights. This year the tournament will be called “Verizon Golf Classic for Kingston Rotary.”

This yearly tournament, to be held on June 24 at the White Horse Golf Course in Kingston, is an event not to be missed. The Challenge begins with a Shotgun start at 12:30 p.m., but come early to finalize registration, pick up your lunch and golf cart and compete in some fun little contests. The $120 per player cost includes green fees, cart, range balls lunch and an awards dinner after the event.

There have been other exciting news and programs at the Kingston Rotary Club lately. Clint Boxman, next year’s incoming president, announced several community projects that the club will launch.
Among these projects are the trail signs that Rotary will install at the North Kitsap Heritage Park. These trail markers will help hikers navigate the myriad trails within the park.

Providing funds and projects for youth is an area that Rotary likes to support. The Kingston Rotary Club recently made a donation to the local Boys and Girl’s Club to help fund after school activities they provide for more than 70 boys and girls.

The Interact Club at Kingston High School has grown in numbers and is starting to plan activities. Their first activity, on Feb. 18, was a movie night at Kingston High School. They showed the movie “Jurassic Park” and selling candy and snacks. Donations are encouraged for this fund-raising activity and the public is invited to attend. Further movie nights will be scheduled.

Kingston Rotary will be sending its first ambassador abroad as part of the Rotary Short-Term Exchange Program. Megan Martin, a sophomore at Kingston High School, recently attended the district summer exchange orientation in Tacoma. Megan learned that she would be matched with an exchange student in Italy.

She will travel there to stay with an Italian family for four weeks, then return to Kingston, with her “Italian Rotary sister” to introduce her to life in the Northwest. Megan will learn the name and location of her Italian family in a few weeks.

Rotary Club of Kingston-North Kitsap meets at noon on Wednesdays at the Kingston Cove Yacht Club.
