The council will continue discussion at its Aug. 13 meeting to allow Dee Coppola to remain on the city’s Planning Commission.

Councilwoman Cindy Lucarelli reported that Coppola is moving outside the city limits, but would like to remain on the commission until her term ends Dec. 15, 2015.

“She has informed the council that she would like to stay on the commission and to continue her good work,” Lucarelli said.

Lucarelli said the Planning Commission policy allows one member to live outside the Port Orchard city limit, but can increase the number if it is a benefit to the city.

Lucarelli presented a motion for Coppola to remain on the commission and was seconded by Councilman Jerry Childs.

Councilman Fred Chang told Lucarelli he resented that the item was not placed on the agenda without any background material.

“It sounds like you’re trying hijack this, to try and get Dee to remain on the Planning Commission,” Chang added.

He asked the council not to vote on the item during the meeting and made a motion.

Chang said he does like the clause that allows a single member of the Planning Committee to reside outside the city limits.

“Especially with our expansion, annexation and new citizens that have come into the city,” Chang said. “I’m sure we can find people residents who are willing to serve on the Planning Commission.”

Councilwoman Carolyn Powers said in the past there has been non-city residents who served on the Planning Commission.

Chang motioned to table the item until the Aug. 13 meeting.

City Attorney Greg Jacoby asked Change to clarify if he wanted the item tabled or continued at the next meeting.

Jacoby said if a motion is tabled, the council has to vote to place the motion back on the agenda. If a motion is continued, it goes to the next meeting.

“We need more information before we can vote on it,” Chang added.

Chang said Coppola may want to address the council at the next meeting.

The council voted unanimously to continue the issue at the Aug. 13 meeting.
