PO man suspected in dozens of burglaries arrested

The chase to apprehend suspected burglar Gary Michael Moyer of Port Orchard has concluded with his arrest by SWAT officials in Eugene, OR.

The Gig Harbor Police Department says in a news release that Moyer was isolated in a “particular location” in Eugene the morning of Feb. 22. Gig Harbor investigators worked with the Eugene and the Oregon State police to locate Moyer as he fled the scene. “After abandoning his automobile, the suspect entered a nearby house before ultimately being taken into custody,” the statement says.

That same morning, law enforcement served a search warrant at a Port Orchard residence. Witnesses reported waking up around 6 a.m. to the sound of flashbangs and a large police presence around Jackson Avenue.

Gig Harbor police chief Kelly Busey said two people were brought out of the house, but neither was arrested. Police entered the house, which officials said resulted in recovery of incriminating evidence. “They’re still removing items, but a lot of stolen property, a lot of burglary tools and some clothing items that are relevant to some investigations,” Busey said.

The arrest ends a long investigation involving several local police departments, Homeland Security and the FBI into the whereabouts of 36-year-old Moyer, who is the suspect of several commercial burglaries and vehicle thefts.

Gig Harbor officials believe the number of charges could reach into the dozens. Moyer had been brought into custody by police following a botched ATM theft at SE Mile Hill Drive in Port Orchard in December but was released after posting $500,000 bail.

Busey said it’s a big arrest for all agencies involved but especially Gig Harbor, as Moyer is believed to be responsible for at least nine commercial burglaries there. He believes Moyer would have been captured sooner if not for vehicular pursuit laws, that “prohibits law enforcement from pursuing for the crime of burglary,” the news release says.

After facing possible charges in Eugene, officials say Moyer will be transported to Pierce County, where he is expected to face charges on all crimes he is suspected of. Crimes charged to his name in Port Orchard include the attempted ATM theft and the theft of an Amazon delivery vehicle in November.
