POULSBO —  Kitsap’s law enforcement agencies are reassessing their approach to mental health and what can be done to improve interactions between first responders and those with behavioral problems.

Poulsbo Police Chief Alan Townsend, King County Sheriff’s Capt. Scott Strathy, and King County Prosecutor David Hackett will lead a presentation on King County’s RADAR program — Risk Awareness, De-escalation and Referral — July 22, 3:30-4:30 p.m., in the Poulsbo City Hall Council Chambers, 200 NE Moe St.

The presentation is free and open to the public.

Under RADAR, officers proactively build voluntary, cooperative relationships with community members, reducing the incidence of crisis situations and giving them more tools to use when crisis situations occur.

It is estimated that 80 percent of adults and 60-70 percent of juveniles who have contact with the criminal justice system suffer from mental health or substance abuse disorders, according to presentation organizers.
