One teen was arrested and more arrests are expected this week in connection with the vandalism at the Veterans’ Memorial Wall and Port Orchard Marina Park last month.

Police Chief Geoffrey Marti said a teen male was arrested and booked into juvenile hall. Marti said he was charged with second-degree malicious mischief.

“Our investigators are still trying to determine the level of involvement of the five teen suspects,” Marti said. “The problem is that two of them are out of town on vacation.”

He said the suspects are composed of both boys and girls.

On June 13, the suspects sprayed graffiti including phrases and pictures on the memorial wall, playground, handicapped parking signs, picnic tables, walkway, garbage containers and a mural wall.

After a police officer discovered the vandalism, Port of Bremerton employees worked to remove or coverup the graffiti. The estimated damage was about $5,000.

Members of the local VFW and volunteers spent Father’s Day cleaning up graffiti sprayed on the Veterans’ Memorial Wall and re-etching names in the bricks.

On Saturday, artist Danielle Rimbert and volunteers from Leadership Kitsap were repainting the mural wall that includes a bright orange sunset, ship and blue waves. A protective coat will be prayed over the mural.
