Port Gamble plugs into its future

Once at the brink of what would have been a financial abyss for many communities across this nation, the former mill town has shown that it not only has the ability to follow its dreams but act as a leader in North Kitsap as well. Port Gamble isn’t just the little engine that could, it’s the little engine that does.

Once at the brink of what would have been a financial abyss for many communities across this nation, the former mill town has shown that it not only has the ability to follow its dreams but act as a leader in North Kitsap as well.

Port Gamble isn’t just the little engine that could, it’s the little engine that does.

The folks at Olympic Property Group are to be commended — yet again — for their diligence in ensuring the town comes into its own. They’ve done great things in a short span of time and show no signs of slowing.

The addition of Pennsylvania-based Weston Solutions Inc. is one that any city would certainly envy. And one that many likely do. As such, the fact that the large environmental research company would select a “mere” community is noteworthy.

Besides the scenic beauty and history of Port Gamble, Weston found value not only in the natural environment surrounding the town but the business climate as well. OPG heard the knock and saw the chance to welcome the valued company in and quickly answered the door.

The acronym could just as easily stand for “Opportunity Port Gamble.” Owners of the town have shown a unique knack to add to the list of successful ventures while retaining the community’s charm. This balance wasn’t easy to strike and is likely even more difficult to maintain, but OPG does it in a fashion we find admirable.

History and new industry can co-exist. Port Gamble is proof of this fact and we feel all of North Kitsap could learn a valuable lesson from the tiny community that not only refuses to bow out but to bow down for money at the risk of losing its identity and character.
