LITTLE BOSTON — “An Evening of Northwest Art, Singing & Dance,” a fundraiser to build a new preschool for children on the Port Gamble S’Klallam reservation, is scheduled for Oct. 22, 6-9 p.m., in the Longhouse on Little Boston Road.

The event is co-hosted by the Port Gamble S’Klallam Foundation and the Port Gamble S’Klallam Early Childhood Education Program.

Tickets are $50 each. The deadline for RSVP is Oct. 10. Tickets will not be sold at the door.

Art on display and for auction will include pieces from local tribal artists and others from across the country. A wide range of artwork will be represented, including beadwork, carvings, clothing, drums, paintings, and prints. The silent auction will also include donated items from local businesses, such as hotel and restaurant packages.

Each ticket holder will be treated to a traditional salmon dinner with entertainment provided by the S’Klallam singers and dancers. Sacred Water, a group made up of members of different area tribes, will also perform.

The new preschool will replace the current structure, which, built in 1939, is the oldest community facility on the reservation. As the needs of the community have grown, so too have the limitations of the current space, restricting the tribe’s ability to offer more services to a greater number of children during the day, as well as extended-day Head Start services. The new facility is planned at 5,100 square feet, compared to the 1,500 square feet of the current structure. So far, the project has received $500,000 in funding in the form of a grant through HUD.
