POULSBO — Port of Poulsbo Commissioner Glenn Gilbert gave his resignation to the board a month ago, citing health concerns.

His resignation comes on the heels of the campaign between incumbent Arnie Bockus and challenger Jim Rutledge for the Position 3 position.

Gilbert represented Position 2. The port is accepting applications from residents interested in taking Gilbert’s position, effective Nov. 30. The appointee  will have to run in the November 2012 election for the right to serve the rest of the term, which expires in 2015, according to port manager Kirk Stickels.

Gilbert said he’s enjoyed his 12 years with the port. He will spend more time in Arizona with his family.

“It was really, really an effort at times to get some of the stuff done that we have done,” Gilbert said. “It’s (taken) a three-person commission to accomplish what’s been done at the port…There are still really good plans in the works.”

One of those plans is a parking lot for port users at the old armory site. Stickels said the port accepted a $236,000 bid from Sound Excavation to develop the lot, with work expected to be completed by early 2012.

This parking lot may also be the first in the area to offer a hook-up for electric vehicles. Stickels said while the demand isn’t here locally yet, they are looking at “prewiring” for electric cars to recharge in the parking lot.

The port is still researching possible revenues from the parking lot, including daily rates and charging for long-term stalls and those electric hook-ups.

Stickels said the port hopes to have the project under way in a few weeks, and are anticipating the lot would be finished early next year.
