The City Council held its shortest meeting of the year, with the Council whipping through the business part of the agenda in 30 minutes.

During the March 12 meeting, the Council approved several contracts related to projects, along with approval of changes to the Shoreline Master Program Update.

Since 2009, The City has been working with the Department of Ecology (DOE) and other groups on the required Shoreline Master Program Update.

Associate Planner Jennifer Haro said in January, the DOE sent a letter to the City granting additional approval to the update upon making 14 changes outlined by DOE.

Haro said an ordinance will be brought before the Council at the March 26 meeting to approve the Shoreline Master Program.

The Shoreline Master Program will go into effect 14 days after DOE has acknowledged that the changes has been approved by the Council.

The City has been working with the DOE, Planning Commission, tribes, citizens and other local governments on the Shoreline Master Program Update since 2009

Council also approved a contract with KCB of Seabeck, to remove asbestos for the Port Orchard Public Library.

KCB bid $20,989 for the project, but the City budgeted $20,000. Kitsap Regional Library agreed to fund the difference between the final cost and the City’s budgeted amount.

In other action, the Council approved:

• Contract for $3,040 with Hemley Septic Tank Cleaning, Inc., to pump solids from the Port Orchard Marina lift station.

• Mayor to execute a Local Area Agreement (LLA) with the state Department of Transportation for construction of sidewalks along Cedar Heights Junior High School.

• Also, LLA with DOT to obligate funding for the easement phase for part of the Bay Street Pedestrian Pathway.
