The death of a Port Orchard man discovered in his home last week after a recent fire was ruled accidental, according to the Kitsap County Coroner’s Office.

Port Orchard Police Department Commander Geoff Marti said that the deceased was Larry Walls, 59, who was found by his brother when he came to check on him April 8 on the 600 block of Sroufe Street and called police shortly after 3 p.m.

Marti said the brother had not heard from the deceased since the previous Wednesday, April 1, and that he came by once a week to help his brother take out the trash.

Marti said officials believe Walls died days prior.

“The Kitsap County Fire Marshal’s investigated and it appears that the deceased had been smoking and that was the cause of the fire,” Marti said, adding that he expects an autopsy to reveal if Walls died before or after the fire began. “But from our investigation, it looks like there is no criminal cause of death.”

Marti said the deceased had apparently fallen asleep, and the fire “extinguished itself due to lack of oxygen, because the house was properly sealed.”

The Kitsap County Coroner’s Office said Tuesday that the cause of Walls’ death was asphyxia, and that the manner of death was accidental.

Coroner Greg Sandstrom said his office believes Walls died the evening of April 5.
