Port Orchard will host a special benefit screening of “Saturday Night Fever,” tonight, 31 years after the popular film brought the disco craze into theaters across the country.

“This is going to be great fun,” said Custom Picture Framing owner Mallory Jackson, one of the organizers. “This movie hasn’t appeared on the big screen for a very long time.”

The event is a cross-promotion between the Orchard Theater, which will show the movie at 7 p.m., and Slip 45, which will host a disco-themed gathering after the movie is over (around 9 p.m.).

The $20 admission price includes the movie, a small popcorn and a soft drink.

Slip 45 will offer complimentary appetizers, drink specials and door prizes.

The dancing will begin around 9 p.m.

A $3 fee will be charged for those without movie tickets.

All proceeds will benefit the Port Orchard Bay Street Association.

Only 75 tickets will be available, and they can be purchased at Custom Picture Framing, The Cutlery Shoppe or the Orchard Theater, all in downtown Port Orchard.

The movie, a portrait of young Brooklyn natives struggling to escape their sheltered lives for freedom and adventure in the big city of Manhattan defined a generation of disco dancers and 1970s youths rebelling against the more traditional expectations of their parents.

It was the first big movie for John Travolta, and also established the Bee Gees as a dance band.
