POULSBO — A 74-year-old Port Orchard woman was killed Friday evening after the 2006 Chevrolet Impala she was riding in overturned in a ravine off Pioneer Way.
The driver, a 76-year-old man, was taken to Harrison Medical Center in Bremerton with non life threatening injuries, according to a Kitsap County Sheriff’s office news release.
The collision happened at about 5:30 p.m. near the intersection of Pioneer Hill Road and Pioneer Way, north of Poulsbo.
Traffic investigators are still looking into the cause of the crash, but a preliminary analysis suggested the car was traveling west on Pioneer Hill Road and failed to stop at the “T” intersection with Pioneer Way. The car continued over the shoulder of Pioneer Way and into a ravine where it struck a large tree and overturned. The car was upside down when Poulsbo Fire Department responders arrived.
The woman – identified as by the Sheriff’s office Monday as Shirley J. Kimball of Port Orchard – was pronounced dead at the scene.
Alcohol and narcotics did not appear to be contributing factors in the wreck but vehicle speed may have played a role, according to the Sheriff’s release. Both occupants were wearing seatbelts.
The Sheriff’s office is requesting anyone with knowledge of the collision to contact Deputy Andrew Aman of the traffic unit at (360) 337-4634.
