The Port of Bremerton Board of Commissioners will host a special meeting with Chief Executive Officer Cary Bozeman to create a three-year plan for the organization’s operations.

“I look at the annual budget as our work plan and I’m hoping we can plan further out than 12 months,” Bozeman said, addressing the board at its regular business meeting Tuesday evening. “We did something similar at the city of Bremerton.”

Bozeman, who said he had been in his new position 10 days, described the job as “hard” and the port did have some work ahead of it, but there was “light at the end of the tunnel.”

The meeting is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. Tuesday, June 30 in Bozeman’s office at the Port of Bremerton National Airport’s terminal offices at 8850 State Route 3.

It is expected to last four hours.

Bozeman said he planned to address several issues, including the Sustainable Energy and Economic Development (SEED) project, leasing out more of the Bremerton Marina and improving parking for and access to the facility, and operating the port more like a successful business.

“We have a responsibility to run like a business and be prudent stewards of the public’s money,” he said.

Bozeman listed some of the topics of discussion:

SEED: “The underlying idea (of having an incubator for sustainable businesses) is fundamentally a good one, but looking at it from a business standpoint brings on a whole other issue.”

Bremerton Marina: “I would like to explore what it would take to move up the lease-out of the marina,” he said.

Cross-SKIA Connector: “The project has now been added to the federal stimulus list and we’ve got to move forward with it.”

Upgrading facilities: “The grounds are pretty old and pretty tired,” he said, explaining while there “isn’t a lot of money to upgrade,” perhaps the port could look at ways to create a development project that would include a hotel and retail, “something that would support the needs of the airport.”

Olympic View Business Park entry road: “This not only goes along with SEED, but would open up our whole park,” he said.

After the meeting, Bozeman said, “We’ll hopefully have a set course for the next 36 months. We might have (to make some adjustments along the way,) but I’d like to all be in agreement about what our course is.”
