SILVERDALE – There’s a new sandwich shop at Kitsap Mall: Potbelly Sandwich Shop opened at Kitsap Mall Sept. 7 with a soft-open, and the store had its grand opening the following day, Sept. 8.
Conveniently situated in the food court, the widely acclaimed neighborhood hangout features toasty warm sandwiches, hand-dipped milkshakes, tasty made-to-order salads, cookies, chips and live, local music.
East Bremerton native Mike Young, 33, is the general manager of the new sandwich shop. Young said there were currently 15 people on staff, but due to better-than-expected customer response he plans on hiring more people soon.
About eight people work on a shift.
“We’re always constantly prepping so everything is fresh,” Young said.
Young said the store had some initial projections for how much business the store would do, but “we blew that out the water the first week.”
“As someone who has spent many years on the Kitsap Peninsula, it gives me great pride to open this shop,” Young said.
Young previously worked at GameStop in the mall, and before that worked at Charlie’s Grilled Subs. Young said Potbelly managers found him at GameStop and asked if he wanted the job.
Before giving them his response, Young took a ferry trip to Seattle to see what Potbelly shops were like. He liked what he saw.
“I really loved the environment. Everyone was friendly. They were very fast-paced,” he said.
Potbelly Sandwich Shop has 10 existing shops in the Seattle area. The first one opened in 1977 in Chicago. The parent company also owns and operates over 300 shops in the United States, and franchisees operate over 20 shops domestically, in the Middle East and in the United Kingdom.
Neighborhood musicians interested in adding a little rhythm into lunch should contact the new shop manager to apply and to schedule an audition.
Potbelly will be open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday. Delivery service will start a few weeks after opening and will be available Monday through Friday 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. with minimum orders of $25.
