Poulsbo Garden Club plant sale is May 5

POULSBO — The Northwest Design Center will be filled with thousands of plants May 5 when the Poulsbo Garden Club hosts its annual plant sale.

The sale is from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Northwest Design Center is located at 18850 State Highway 305 NE, Poulsbo.

“We’ve salvaged over 800 plants from seven members’ gardens through digging parties,” plant sale chair Tess Frazier stated in a press release. In addition to the salvaged plants, each club member is donating at least 20 plants. “That means we’ll have nearly 2,000 plants for sale.”

Proceeds from the sale go back to the community through grants supporting education and beautification projects. More than $10,000 has been given to schools, girl and boy scout clubs and public gardens around the north end of Kitsap County.

This year money was given to Fish Park; the Raab Park Youth Garden; the Suquamish P-Patch; North Kitsap School District’s PAL program; and the Poulsbo Fire Department. The Poulsbo Fire grant is for plastic covering to protect plants from the cold in their vegetable garden.

Gayle Larson, edible garden advisor from Dancing Raven Design, is working with the fire department to build the garden that will provide fresh produce for the NK Fishline food bank. Last year, the garden produced 200 pounds of food for Fishline, according to the release.

The perennial plants, vegetables, shrubs and tress come from local gardens, which means they are suited for the Northwest’s climate.

Those attending the sale will also have the opportunity to join the garden club. The club meets the second Saturday of each month at the Poulsbo Library. Meetings cover a variety of gardening topics. Members range from master gardeners to rookies.

The Kingston Garden Club will also be hosting their annual plant sale Saturday, from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. at the Kingston Community Center, 11212 NE State Highway 104. More info at www.kingstongardenclub.com
