A man accused of robbing a Silverdale bank Jan. 12 had gambled away money taken from his mother.

“He robbed the bank because he needed the money,” an anonymous source told a Kitsap County sheriff’s detective, according to court documents.

The accused thief, Thomas Riley Wilson, 29, of Poulsbo, was charged Tuesday with second-degree robbery after deputies arrested him Jan. 15.

Wilson allegedly passed a note to a teller at the US Bank inside the Albertsons grocery store at 2222 NW Bucklin Hill Road, saying, “Hand Over hundreds and fiftys Only Don’t try to be a hero and things wont get out of control!!”

Court documents say that when the suspect approached the teller, the teller attempted to strike up a conversation about the suspect’s clothing, a mismatch of a Gonzaga University sweatshirt and a Washington State University cap.

The teller “saw the male in the college attire as he was approaching his station and he tried to engage him in conversation but the male never talked,” according to documents.

The anonymous source told the detective the suspect relayed the teller’s attempt to start a conversation, “saying Gonzaga and Wazzu would never go together.”

In all, Wilson is accused of walking away with $2,150, the documents said.

When asked where the rest of the money was upon his arrest, Wilson allegedly said all that remained was in his pants pockets, then refused to answer further questions.

Although the anonymous source told the detective where the suspect had ditched the clothes — stolen from a department store before the robbery — the clothes were not recovered, documents said.

But detectives reported they recovered a paper notepad at the residence, decorated with a lamb, that matched the note given to the US Bank teller.
