Unattended pot

sparks kitchen fire

INDIANOLA — A simmering pot left temporarily unattended on a stove caught fire and destroyed a microwave before the homeowner returned home and extinguished the fire late last week.

Crews from North Kitsap Fire & Rescue were called to Seaview Avenue shortly before 12:30 p.m. last Thursday.

While the fire had been squelched when firefighters arrived, smoke was still coming from the residence.

Flames from the fire singed the upper cabinets of kitchen while the heat melted a portion of the microwave positioned directly above the stove. The pot and its contents, which was simmering stew meat, were ruined.

The woman said she had been cooking the meat when she left the house to pick berries. When she headed back to the house, she heard the home’s smoke alarms and discovered the flames. She then put out the stove fire with a portable extinguisher.

There were no injuries to firefighters or civilians.
