Poulsbo man spends hours yelling for help in Cowlitz lake

LONGVIEW — A Poulsbo man spent more than four hours beside a capsized boat Wednesday before being rescued, the Daily News of Longview reported.

Charles Liebenrood, 64, was fishing on Silver Lake in Cowlitz County when he attempted to pull anchor on a rented aluminum boat. The shift in weight capsized the small boat about 200 yards from shore.

In a stroke of luck, Liebenrood was able to locate a submerged snag or piling to stand upon and keep his heard above water, Cowlitz County Sheriff’s Captain Mark Nelson told the paper.

“I’m guessing he didn’t swim ashore because from where he was, it was a long ways to where he could see any residences,” Nelson told the paper. “Honestly, he did the right thing pretty much by staying with the boat and putting his (life jacket) on.”

Liebenrood had been shouting for three hours before anyone on the shore heard him, Nelson said.
