Poulsbo parking still squeaky wheel

We’ve hit on the problem of downtown Poulsbo’s popularity before. The short stretch along Front Street has been experiencing growing pains of all strengths since it was “revived” and took on its Norwegian theme.

It’s almost become a victim of its own success in terms of available parking and while the issue has been lamented time and time again, a definite plan is still proving elusive. It’s not for lack of discussion, though. Lack of action? Certainly, but with options that include creating one-way streets (and hardships for those who reside on 1st and 3rd avenues) and costly parking garage (two stories, no less), the city is still in a bind.

The squeaky wheel is getting plenty of grease in this case but it’s spinning away in the mire of indecision. And its tire’s tread is wearing thin, getting slicker with each passing year.

True, Poulsbo has a traffic study in the works concerning 3rd Avenue but what if the study doesn’t offer a viable solution? What if Jeff Lincoln’s right and the street is simply too tight to one-way?

Will the city and the Historic Downtown Business Association shrug and accept going back to square one or will there be other options they can turn to?

Speaking of the HDPA, we wonder how many business owners and employees took our past advice and are parking several blocks away from the district — walking to work in an effort to improve access for customers. That would open up spaces immediately.

It’s not a final solution but it is a viable, temporary fix and with another busy summer on its way, downtown could use the push.
