The American Legion, Department of Washington, has named Jeffrey Zantek, 17, of Poulsbo as the Department of Washington’s 2010 Eagle Scout of the Year. He will be awarded a $1,000 scholarship as part of this award.
Zantek, the son of John and Marj Henry, obtained his Eagle Award in 2007 and is a member of Venturing Crew 1042 chartered to the Poulsbo Post 245 of The American Legion. His Crew is in the Orca District of the Chief Seattle Council. He earned 57 merit badges and seven Palms. He has earned two Venturing Bronze Awards for Outdoor and Religious Life and is a candidate for the Venturing Gold and Silver Awards. He has received the BSA National Youth Leadership Award. He is a Vigil member of the Order of the Arrow.
His Eagle Scout Service Project established a permanent flag retirement repository in the downtown Poulsbo community and supporting mechanism to collect and properly dispose of worn flags. Since its construction, more than 1,200 flags have been retired.
Zantek is a senior at Crosspoint Academy where he participates in theater, choral music and cross country. He hopes to attend the University of Montana and major in history with career goals in either law, foreign service or the clergy/ministry.
Zantek will receive his award and scholarship at the department convention in Grand Mound in July. He has been nominated as the department’s candidate for the National Award, which includes a $10,000 scholarship.
