Poulsbo school wins state Knowledge Bowl title

West Sound Academy of Poulsbo won the 1B Knowledge Bowl State Tournament March 13 in Wenatchee.

Mia Lowell of Bainbridge Island is the team captain. Other members are Lucy Schmitt, Zia Magill, Noah Holly, Andrew Corbo and Nadia Fisch. The team is coached by Susan Trower and Catherine Freeman.

“We first started competing in Knowledge Bowl back in fall of 2008. The team this year has been terrific at listening and supporting one another in every round,” Trower said.

In the finale, West Sound had 17 points to nine for Evergreen Lutheran and eight for Naselle.

Teams from all over the state competed at Wenatchee High School. The morning competition began with a written round of 50 multiple-choice questions, then four rounds of 50 oral questions each.

West Sound was in first place after the first five rounds, then faced off against the sixth-place team from Wilbur-Creston in the semifinal round. WSA was behind for much of that match, but pulled ahead in the end to win 16 to 14.
