A second, southern driveway entrance proposed to be installed as part of the renovation and modernization of Silverdale Elementary School has riled homeowners located near the school property.
The school currently has a driveway that connects to Dickey Road NW, but may also add a driveway connecting it to Knute Anderson Road to the south.
Homeowners along Knute Anderson Road object to the new driveway and say there are only 20 families along Knute Anderson Road who have children who attend the school. They fear the parents will simply park their cars along the road to drop the kids off and will not pull into the school driveway.
Central Kitsap School District held a meeting with around 36 of the homeowners. One of the homeowners, Pete Wimmer said the meeting was “contentious.”
Robin Shoemaker, director of capital projects for CKSD, said that in response to the complaints the district reconfigured its traffic flow and focused on using the Dickey Road entrance, and also made the Knute Anderson Road entrance narrower.
Shoemaker said area residents, however, don’t want the southern entrance at all.
Shoemaker said due to the steeper grade along Dicky Road, the southern entrance could allow for a more “gracious” slope situation on the school property.
Shoemaker said no more neighbor meetings would be held, but said the district would mail information about the conditional use permits to those residents.
