t Incumbent Poulsbo Mayor Kathryn Quade announces bid for re-election.

POULSBO — Incumbent Poulsbo Mayor Kathryn Quade announced via a press release Sunday she will seek re-election for a second term in office.

Quade was elected to her seat in 2005, ousting incumbent contender Donna Jean Bruce for the four-year term with nearly 67 percent of the general election vote.

Quade broke records in her first bid for mayor, earning more than 1,000 votes in the 2005 primary — the first in the city’s history to garner that many in the primary. Her 2005 win also marked the first time since 1981 that a new mayor won the general election without previously being sworn in as a political appointee.

During her tenure Quade’s actions include honoring the 2006 citizen advisory vote to retain a downtown city hall, where site excavation is now nearly complete; securing $250,000 for the re-opening of the Poulsbo Marine Science Center; establishing citizen advisory groups to review and recommend changes to the Critical Areas Ordinance and Planned Residential Development codes in comprehensive planning; and widening State Route 305, which now sports HOV lanes and pedestrian and bicycle safety enhancements, according to her statement.

Quade listed other mayoral accomplishments, including establishing a Centennial Committee to guide the planning of four major events during the Viking City’s 100th year, coordinating the Vetter Homestead project, a Kitsap County Consolidated Housing Authority self-help housing development, and signing into agreement the use of the Martinson Cabin for the Poulsbo Historical Society. The cabin, at Nelson Park, now provides an artifactual hands-on history lesson on Poulsbo’s first pioneers.

More recently, under Quade’s hand, the city has attained a heightened AA bond rating, purchased property to relocate the Public Works maintenance bay and landed a deal with Harrison Hospital, which is now planning to construct a cancer care campus along 10th Avenue.

Quade said the city now must “focus on our future with a steady hand.”

“With another 4 year term, we can add to this list of accomplishments while working to ensure Poulsbo comes through the current economic crisis smoothly,” the statement reads. “I have fulfilled my promise to be a full-time mayor and look forward to serving our citizens for four more years.”

Quade previously served on Poulsbo’s City Council. According to her statement, she will officially kickoff her re-election campaign with a public event after the start of the new year.

According to the Kitsap County Auditor’s office, filings for the November 2009 election will begin the first full week in June.
