Read on, summer readers | Check It Out | August

August is the month when we encourage everyone to continue their summer reading in earnest.

Remember that all who are signed up for summer reading, young people through age 18, can turn in their summer reading trackers with at least 10 hours read, for a free book and a free pass to the county fair.

Those who have turned in a tracker with more than 20 hours of reading will receive admission to the Super Summer Reader Party.

This year, the party will be held at the Kingston Corn Maze and Pumpkin Patch. The Maze is located at Sunrise Hill Farm and the Super Summer Readers will have their celebration from 3-5 p.m. on Aug. 31.

All Kitsap Teens ages 13 through 18 are eligible to enter the Kitsap Regional Library Teen Short Story Contest for 2010, called “Write On!” Stop by our library to view the amazing photograph or go to www.krl.org to view it.

Write an original short story based on the photograph; submit it using the forms available at the library, or downloadable from the Kitsap Regional Library website. Short stories must be turned in by Aug. 30 to be eligible for props, acclaim and fantastic prizes.

Our book groups are meeting all summer.

The Kingston Library Book Group is meeting on 10:30 a.m. Aug. 4, in the Indianola Room to discuss the “Zookeeper’s Wife.” The subtitle of the book by Diane Ackerman is “a War Story.”

Jared Diamond, author of Guns, Germs, and Steel, wrote in praise, “This powerful thrill would be a great novel — except that it happens to be true.”

The Classics Book Group will meet at 6:30 p.m. on Aug.16 in the Indianola Room to talk about “Frankenstein,” by Mary Shelley. “Frankenstein” has stood the test of time. Join us to discuss how the book influenced many of the movies in the horror genre.

On Aug. 19, there will be a party honoring Suzanne Jones for her year of dedicated service as manager of the Little Boston library, held at the Little Boston branch. On that same evening, a party at the Village Green will have lots of fun activities as people join to “Go for the Green.”

Finally, the Kitsap Regional Library Board of Trustees will hold their regular meeting at 5:30 p.m. on Aug. 24 in the Apple Tree Room.

Come and check it out!
