Join us in commemoration of the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks at a community breakfast on Sept. 11 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Paul T. Nichol headquarters fire station (26642 Miller Bay Road NE, near Kingston).
Savor light continental fare such as pastries, fruit, yogurt, meats and cheeses while enjoying the company of your firefighters as well as familiar neighbors and new friends. There will be a very brief ceremony at 8:45 a.m., symbolizing the time that the first plane hit the first tower at the World Trade Center, and including a flag presentation by the members of Cub Scout Pack 4555 in honor of those who were lost in the attacks.
There is no charge for the meal, provided by NKF&R’s firefighters and the Suquamish Clearwater Casino, but donations will be accepted to benefit two special charities:
— Tuesday’s Children (www.tuesdayschildren.org) was established in 2001 with the goal of promoting healing and recovery for more than 3,000 children who lost parents in the attacks. Since then, the organization has broadened its mission to include those impacted by terrorist events worldwide.
— The second charity is Snowball Express (www.snowballexpress.org) whose mission is to create hope and new memories for the children of our fallen military heroes who have died while serving our country since 9/11.
We expect a large turnout for the event and encourage carpooling.
Free car seat check
This month’s free child car-seat check will be held at the Paul T. Nichol headquarters fire station (26642 Miller Bay Road NE) on Sept. 10 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Yard sale
Firefighters and staff have been engaged in a massive cleaning effort throughout the district’s facilities, and have identified a wide range of surplus items that will be made available to the public in a yard sale on Sept. 17 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. No early birds, please.
Bolt It – Brace It – Do It
Save your home from earthquake damage with a new program from Kitsap County’s Department of Emergency Management.
The “Bolt It – Brace It – Do It” program is targeted at teaching homeowners more about retrofitting wood-frame houses built before 1985 for greater resistance to earthquake damage through bolting structures to foundations and improving sheer/pony wall strength.
The first free three-hour class will be held on Sept. 24. Visit www.kitsapdem.org or call 307-5871 for more information.
First Aid, CPR and AED class
On Sept. 17 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., we’ll host a course that teaches vital lifesaving skills to American Heart Association standards.
The class will take place in our Paul T. Nichol headquarters fire station (26642 Miller Bay Road NE). Tuition of $40 per student must be paid in advance to reserve space in the popular class. For more information, call us at 297-3619.
