Rebekah Layng, 23, lights a candle at a Warren Avenue vigil May 4 for Sara Burke, 19, who was found dead at the spot the evening before, the victim of a single stab wound to the neck. More than 50 people turned out for the vigil, holding candles and sharing memories and prayers.

Bremerton police are asking any motorists or pedestrians in the area of Warren Avenue between Eighth and Ninth Avenue during the hours of 9:20 and 9:40 p.m. to contact detectives. Burke was found near the home of her boyfriend, Richard Heard, 21, who said he had spoken to her on the phone an hour and a half before. “I told her I’ll see you later and I love you,” Heard said. Friends said the teen was walking to hang out with a friend.

Police Lt. Pete Fisher said people should be aware of their surroundings and responsible for their own personal safety.

“Having said that, there is no information that leads us to believe there is a person on the loose targeting random citizens,” Fisher said. Those with information on the case can contact detectives at (360) 473-5481.
