Roller Vixens will host skate night for nonprofit

The league will host an open skating event and present a check to the nonprofit, Georgia's House.

Kitsap’s own roller derby league, Slaughter County Roller Vixens, will host a special skate night on Saturday, April 27 at Skateland at 740 NE Fuson Rd in Bremerton. The event will begin at 7 p.m. and run until 10 p.m.

The league partnered with the Weaver Foundation’s Georgia’s House and will present the nonprofit with a check during the session. Georgia’s House works with displaced women and children, offering shelter and support for women to get back on their feet during hard times.

The April 27 event will be mostly an open skate, with the presentation of the check and the possibility of roller derby demonstrations from team skaters, according to team spokeswoman Julia Monahan.

“We might do some kind of bout demonstration,” Monahan said, “but most likely it’s just going to be an open skate for people to come out and learn more about roller derby and Georgia’s house and just hang out.”

The team will have a booth where attendees can learn more about roller derby or purchase team merchandise.

The Slaughter County skaters helped raise money for Georgia’s House earlier this year during their annual Wild West Showdown, where a number of roller derby teams from around the nation converge on the Kitsap County Fairgrounds.

“We chose to work with Georgia’s House because we are a league of strong women from all walks of life and are always looking for other nonprofits that promote female empowerment,” said a statement by the Roller Vixens’ outreach coordinator Erica Sierra.

The Roller Vixen’s give a portion of all their profits from bouts to local nonprofit organizations. Attendees can help the skaters raise money at their April 27 event by saying at the door they are there to skate with Slaughter County Roller Vixens and Georgia’s House.

Tickets are $6.50 at the door. More information can be found at the group’s Facebook page.

Slaughter County Roller Vixens’ next official bout will take place Saturday, May 25 at 7 p.m. against Cherry City Boneyard Brawlers.
