Rotary awards $48,000 in scholarships to SK students

The Port Orchard Rotary Club awarded college scholarships to 20 South Kitsap High School students May 28.

Among the $48,000 of awards given that morning at Whisky Gulch was the Maynard Lundberg Memorial Scholarship, which was awarded to Grace Degarimore and Fletcher Bergeson. The scholarship that has honored Lundberg since 1984 was upped to $5,000 per recipient.

Bill Evans, executive director of the Maynard Lundberg Education Foundation, said, “Our award honors Maynard’s legacy of school spirit, athletic involvement, scholastic achievement and giving back to your community.”

Both students excelled their senior year. Degarimore won two state track and field titles just a few days prior, and Bergeson earned the title of valedictorian with a 4.0 grade point average.

Club president Wayne Wright said, “Our Rotary club spends a lot of effort and time thinking about how we can change our world here, in our families, in our communities and abroad. This is one of the big things we love to do.”
