The Safeway signature sign once again will adorn its former Port Orchard location on Bethel Road SE and Lund Avenue.
An article in the Seattle Times Nov. 13 reported that Safeway’s parent company Albertsons was successful in bidding for 12 of the grocery stores auctioned off by Haggen, including the Port Orchard site.
Earlier this year, the Bellingham-based Haggen purchased the Port Orchard site along with 146 West Coast Albertsons and Safeway locations to introduce and expand its upscale brand. The massive expansion failed to take hold in many of the markets ill-suited to Haggen’s pricey premium brand products.
Six locations in Washington will be rebranded as Albertsons stores, and five as Safeway. One site was bid by Yoke’s Foods in Liberty Lake.
Prior to the Haggen acquisition, the Bethel location was a popular Safeway branch. The former Gig Harbor store also will be rebranded as a Safeway site.
The bid for the Port Orchard wasn’t disclosed although it was widely reported to be $200,000 prior to the auction. Albertsons has not responded with details of the auction acquisitions.
