With four varying views, communication is one major component of the Bremerton School Board the candidates for Position 1 would like to see improved.

Cynthia Large, Christianne Martin, Scott Rahm and J. David Rubie met at the Bremerton Area Chamber of Commerce-hosted Eggs and Issues forum Tuesday to allow residents a chance to ask questions about their individual qualifications and intentions if chosen.

Questions spanned topics from plans to generate additional resources to the future fate of extracurricular activities.

“Every program needs to be evaluated,” Rahm said in response to the latter. “Everyone is going to feel the pain.”

Mayoral candidate Daryl Daugs also was present at the forum and asked whether or not the school board candidates support a partnership between BSD and the Kitsap Pumas soccer.

Rubie, Martin and Rahm all agreed partnerships are crucial to the survival of schools during economic hardships, but also agreed caution was required to be sure children are the most important part of the partnerships.

Large was more skeptical in her answer.

“I don’t want to see our children desensitized with senseless advertising,” she said, adding the school district should set strict guidelines for any and all partnerships it enters into with public or private entities.

The panel was asked whether or not they would support a voucher system, whereby citizens can decide which school gets their portion of the levy money.

Rubie, Large and Martin all admitted they did not have a lot of information on the voucher system and would need to do more research into it, but Rahm said he strongly opposes a voucher system.

“Systems like this drive students to other schools,” Rahm said. “It will divide the district.”
