KHS students perform well on National Financial Literacy challenge
Seven Kingston High School students scored in the top 25 percent out of 46,000 high school students from across the nation who took the National Financial Literacy challenge sponsored by the U.S. Department of Treasury. Marissa Bhatnagar, Kimmi Calkins, Mike Cornelius, Ryan Eggers, Kaitlin Ferland, Brittany Hernandez and Debra Simpson finished in the top 25.
Summit Program teacher selected by East Asia Resource Center
Phil Campbell, a teacher with the Summit program, is one of 12 teachers selected by the East Asia Resource Center to participate in a three-week trip to Japan and South Korea. The group will be hosted by Japanese and South Korean families and will meet with and learn from Japanese and South Korean administrators and teachers.
Vinland Elementary biliteracy kindergarten program
Vinland Elementary still has limited space available in their biliteracy (English-Spanish) kindergarten program for 2008-09. The first-grade biliteracy class is full, but both full-day and half-day kindergarten space is available. If interested, please contact Lynette at Vinland at (360) 394-2924 before June 18.
Summer WASL Information
Students who were in grades 10, 11 and 12 during the 2007-08 school year are eligible to take one, two or all three content areas — reading, writing or math — of the 2008 High School WASL. This includes students who met standard or didn’t meet standard, didn’t participate in testing or who have transferred from out of state.
The reading portion will be administered from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 11 ; mathematics will be 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 12; and writing will be 8 a.m to 3 p.m Aug. 13-14. Students may register online at www.k12.wa.us/waslregistration or via the toll-free telephone number (866) 400-WASL (9275) between June 9 and June 27. To register students will need their state student ID number (SSID) which may be found on the WASL score report, by contacting Diane Naples at dnaples@nkschools.org or (360) 598-8522, or by calling the district office, (360) 779-8717, after June 18.
KHS National Honor Society Inductees
The Kingston High School National Honor Society inducted 19 members on April 21. The evening ceremony at the school was the inaugural effort for the newly chartered organization. The induction ceremony recognized the strong academic and community-service efforts of the students involved in the nationally known program. To qualify, students are expected to achieve and maintain a grade point ratio of 3.3-4.0 and commit to several levels of individual and group community service. Olivia Finlay is the National Honor Society’s president; Caitlin O’Morchoe, vice president; Felicia Drone, treasurer; Nathan Chase, historian; and Elle Sander, parliamentarian. Along with the officers, the following students were inducted into the society: Rachel Bishop, Rachel Daniels, Madalyne Lindgren, Lindsay Lyon, Kimo Mackey, Kira Markey, Jeremy Montgomery, Mitch Murdock, Tereasa Nguyen, Erika Rabura, Sam Shoemaker, Jenna Slingerland, Shannen Smith, Rosie Wayand, Alan Weber and Chelsea Wilson.
