Local principals honored

Reese Ande, assistant principal at Kingston High, and Kathy Prasch, principal of North Kitsap High, won Principal of the Year honors this month. Ande was selected as the Olympic League Distinguished Assistant Principal of the Year, and Prasch was chosen as the Olympic League Distinguished Principal of the Year by the MetLife/National Association of Secondary School Principals program. Both principals are now in the running for the 2011 Washington state principal of the year award. State winners in both categories will be announced in May 2010.

North Kitsap pool offers swim camp

The North Kitsap Community Pool is offering a swim camp from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday for elementary students. Cost is $30 for a half day and $50 for the full day. Call (360) 598-1070 to make reservations.

Support the Season of Giving at NKHS

The North Kitsap High School PTSA is looking for assistance in supporting students in need throughout the holiday season. The PTSA’s Season of Giving program supplies about 30 students with food, toiletries and gift cards as needed. Mail or drop off donations at North Kitsap High, 1780 NE Hostmark St., Poulsbo, WA 98370. Checks should be made payable to NKHS PTSA.

North Kitsap FFA offers wreaths

The North Kitsap Future Farmers of America is having its annual wreath sale. A 24-inch wreath sells for $20, and a 16-inch wreath is $15. Wreaths will be available for pickup from 9 a.m. to noon Dec. 12, and must be pre-ordered any time before then. To order, email Jonathan Houk at jhouk@nkschools.org.

Camp Fire groups collecting socks and toiletries

Vinland and Breidablik elementary schools are collecting new socks and toiletry items for Camp Fire groups #1239 and #1240 to donate to people in need. Anyone who would like to donate may drop items off in the collection boxes at the front of the two schools from Dec. 14-18. Donations will be distributed throughout Kitsap County.

NKHS Sign Choir to perform at elementary schools

The North Kitsap High School Sign Choir will visit four local elementary schools Dec. 16 on its inaugural Christmas Tour. The tour begins at 9:30 a.m. at Gordon Elementary and continues at 10:30 a.m. at Vinland Elementary. The next performance is at 1:30 p.m. at Suquamish Elementary. The final performance will be at 2:55 p.m. at Wolfle Elementary.

Breidablik students plant rain garden

Students at Breidablik Elementary School last week planted a rain garden at the school. The garden was funded by a grant from the Sierra Club and proceeds from the Breidablik library’s book fairs.

OC presents free college tuition program

The College Bound Scholarship program will host an informational meeting to teach parents and students about a free college tuition program from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at Olympic College’s Bremer Student Center in Bremerton. The College Bound Scholarship program is open to eligible seventh and eighth grade students. Learn about Japan without leaving home

Students from the Shimokitazawa Seitoku Girls’ High School in Tokyo will be visiting Kingston from March 10-29, 2010, and need places to stay. The students will attend classes during the day and have free time to spend with their host families in the evenings and on weekends.
