I-728 funds public meeting

The North Kitsap School District will host a public meeting to gather community and staff input about spending of the I-728 funds for the 2009-2010 school year. The meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. March 11 in the board room of the Student Support Services Building, 18360 Caldart Ave., Poulsbo. For additional information, call (360) 394-2610.

NKHS musicians headed to state

Several North Kitsap High School musicians have been selected to compete at the State Solo and Ensemble Contest April 24-25 at Central Washington University in Ellensburg.

The musicians include:

Megan Webster on flute; Alex Vidal on clarinets; Alex Thompson on tenor saxophone; Valarie Rock on trumpet; Simone Maule on french horn; Rex Olson on tuba; Amy VanCleave on timpani; Shannon Nakaya and Alanna Vidal in the small woodwind ensemble; the flute quintet of Megan Webster, Erica Dowden, Ali Marks, Alanna Vidal and Shannon Nakaya in the large woodwind ensemble; Tim Shoop and Caleb Stigile in the small brass ensemble; and the large percussion ensemble, Lazer Katz, featuring Nate May, Jacob Gilman, Shawna Williams, Bryson Breakey and Joe Adkins.

Tickets are on sale now for the Kingston High School 2009 Grad Night.

The cost is $120 until March 15, when the price increases to $150. A down payment of $60 reserves one space, with the balance due by March 15. Payment plans and scholarships are available.

The chaperoned event will begin at 8:30 p.m. June 13, and feature activities, food, prizes and entertainment to please everyone.

OC Culinary Institute interviewing students for spring quarter

The nationally accredited Olympic College Culinary Arts Program is interviewing students interested in a career in culinary arts and hospitality management for the upcoming spring quarter. Classes begin March 30 and are from 7:30 a.m. to 1:50 p.m. Monday through Friday. The curriculum includes catering and banquets, international cuisine, fine dining and serv-safe. Also included in the curriculum is baking for restaurants and institutions.

Financial aid and Worker re-training assistance is available to qualified applicants and scholarships are available through the Olympic College Financial aid office. Advising is ongoing.

Olympic College is the official “Homeport Training” site for U.S. Navy Galley Watch Captain training. Enrollment can be arranged through the Trident Training Facility (TTF) located at Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor.

Field by the Foot

The Vinland Elementary PTSA is kicking off a “Field by the Foot” campaign to raise the final $15,000 needed for the first phase of its Vinland Community Field project.

The PTSA will launch the fundraising campaign today at its auction at 6:30 p.m., and at Central Market in Poulsbo March 14 and 28, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Each donation will be recognized with a student-decorated orca-, dolphin- or salmon-shaped sign attached to the fencing around the field. The three levels of giving are: $1,000 for an orca, $500 for a dolphin and $100 for a salmon. A donation of $100 pays for about one cubic foot of a field, including drainage, irrigation, grading and hydroseeding.

The fields will be used for soccer and baseball, and will be available for use by local schools as well as sports clubs.

Joint concert at NK Auditorium

The North Kitsap High School band will join musical forces with Navy Band Northwest Thursday for a 7 p.m. concert at the North Kitsap Community Auditorium.

Cell phones and teen safety

Do you know how to help your child deal with the safety issues surrounding teens and cell phones?

Poulsbo Middle School PTA invites all parents to a special presentation on Wednesday, March 11 at 6 p.m. in the PMS library. The speaker is Frank Enfinger, Forensic Specialist. The presentation will focus on keeping your child safe when using their cell phone. He will also discuss ways to monitor the usage of your child’s cell phone.

Montessori mornings for parents and children

Children’s Garden Montessori School of Poulsbo offers a free introduction to Montessori classroom activities for preschoolers and their parents. Spring invites the discovery of all kinds of flowers, seeds, and leaves in our gardens, fields, and play area. We will spend time both inside and outside exploring the natural wonders of the garden along with the Montessori classroom resources to learn more about the parts of flowers, how seeds grow, and leaf shapes. Children may create bouquets or leaf collections to take home.

The activities will be from 9:30-11 a.m. March 13 and 27.

Parents and children ages 2 and a half to 4 are welcome. The activity is free. Space is limited. Call (360) 779-1225 to sign up for one or both mornings.

Christ the King Academy hosts 25th annual auction

Christ the King Academy will host its 25th annual auction March 14 at the Christ Memorial Church campus in Poulsbo. This year’s theme, “A Night in Hawaii,” features entertainment, appetizers and dinner. Trips to Mexico and Hawaii, boating adventures, and a plasma screen television will be some of the many items up for bid at both the silent and live auctions. Previews begin at 5 p.m., with dinner served at 6:30 p.m., followed by the live auction and dessert auction. Tickets are $40 per person. NK Options Program final information session

The North Kitsap Options Program will host its final information night of the school year March 25 at 7 p.m. at Gordon Elementary. Come and learn about what Options has to offer students and families.

The Options Program is a district-wide, parent involved, multi-age program that accepts students from kindergarten through 8th grade in three classes: K-1-2, 3-4-5 and 6-7-8. Curriculum follows standards and guidelines for the district, but teachers develop and write a substantial portion of materials as well. There is an emphasis on community experiences, and learning is seen as a life-long endeavor. Parents are part of a non-profit group, meet regularly and actively enrich what goes on in classes with special “mini-classes,” field trips, projects, drama productions, art, science, languages, environmental studies, gardening and a wealth of additional topics.

Hansville Preschool auction

Hansville Preschool will host a silent auction March 28 from 3-6 p.m. at the Greater Hansville Community Center. Items up for bid include Mariner’s tickets, full body massages and gift certificates to various restaurants and stores.

Activities include face painting from 3-4 p.m. and salsa dance lessons from 4-4:45 p.m. Fresh baked goodies and refreshments will also be available.

Help! My kid needs a job

Dan Weedin, an award-winning speaker and educator, will host “Help! My kid needs a job,” a class to help high school and college students improve their communication and interview skills.

Classes are open to everyone age 15-22, and will be held March 12 from 6-8 p.m. and March 14 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Poulsbo Recreation Center. Cost is $32. For more information, and to register for the class, call the Poulsbo Parks and Recreation Department at (360) 779-9898.

Youth Law Enforcement Career Camp

The Washington State Patrol is currently accepting applications for the 31st annual Washington State Patrol-Kiwanis Youth Law Enforcement Career Camp, to be held at the WSP Academy in Shelton July 25-31.

Applications can be downloaded from the WSP Web site home page, under “Outreach.”

The purpose of the camp is to provide selected high school juniors and seniors a chance to explore job opportunities within the law enforcement field.
