Seven Quest students from Marcus Whitman Junior High School will compete May 4 at the History Day state competition at Bellevue College in Bellevue. The students will compete in six categories at state.

The seven students advanced from the Regional History Day contest on March 25 at Olympic College in Bremerton. Twenty-four students from Marcus Whitman competed in the regional contest against grades 6-12 from school on the Kitsap and Olympic Peninsulas.

Connor Anchick, a 9th-grader, placed first for his website on “The American Submarine’s Role in the Allied Force’s Victory During the Pacific War.”

Eighth-grader Mary Sprague took first for her performance on “The Red Scare in Hollywood: A Turning Point for Our Nation.”

Moriah Graziani and Amber Watson, both eighth-graders, captured second for their group performance on “The Titanic Tragedy and Its Impact on International Seafaring Laws.”

Ninth-grader Sarah Brown was second for her exhibit on “The Great Seattle Fire: A Blessing in Disguise.”

Another 9th-grader, Nigel Keating, placed second for his website on “Battle of Midway: Turning Point in the Pacific War.”

Seventh-grader Naia Kennedy placed fifth on her exhibit “Japanese Internment Camps: Let It Not Happen Again.”

Teacher Tom O’Loughlin heads up the school’s Quest class for gifted students.
