The Kitsap Health District today issued a warning against touching the water or harvesting shellfish along the Port Washington Narrows following a sewage leak that released an estimated 50,000 gallons of untreated human waste into the waterway.

The “no contact advisory” comes a day after the spill occurred, and follows the city’s reporting of the spill to the county. The city reported a sewage spill from a beach sewer line near Marlow Avenue northwest of the Manette Bridge in East Bremerton, according to a health department statement.

The no contact advisory covers Port Washington Narrows between Point Herron and Tracyton. The county expects to lift the warning on Friday. Health District staff are posting warning signs at public access areas in the Narrows near the spill. During the advisory, the public is advised to avoid contact with the water and not harvestshellfish.

With the blockage now located, the City expects to remove it tomorrow when the tide is judged to be low enoughfor the work to be accomplished.

The City currently estimates that approximately 50,000 gallons of sewage has leaked onto the beach and into the Narrows.
