A 39-year-old Shelton man died Monday from injuries sustained while working on Manette Bridge construction Saturday.

David Robecker was working on a barge and operating a large winch at about 8 a.m. when the winch broke and a piece struck him in the head, according to Bremerton police reports.

He was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. He died Monday night of his injuries, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Robecker was wearing a hard hat when he was hit, police reports said.

Both the state Labor and Industries department and the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration are investigating the incident, said Dick Dolmseth, chief financial officer of Manson Construction, Robecker’s employer.

“We did have an equipment failure with the winch,” Dolmseth said.

Construction resumed Tuesday, but work was optional for employees.
