Sheriff deputies close one case, another is ongoing

KITSAP COUNTY — The Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office closed one case, but another is still open.

Arson, burglary suspects arrested

Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office detectives working the recent South Kitsap School District burglary and arson investigation have arrested a second 16-year-old, a South Kitsap High School student.

Another suspect had been arrested earlier.

Detectives continued the investigation and were able to identify, locate and make the second juvenile at the suspect’s home.

Both suspects were booked into the Kitsap County Juvenile Detention Center, charged with second-degree burglary for breaking into the kitchen warehouse and second-degree arson for setting fire to a pickup used to haul the trailer carrying the high school’s rowing shells.

From what investigators have determined, the two suspects “were just being malicious and had no reason for the crimes they committed,” according to the KCSO Facebook page.

Investigation continues on Careaga case

“There’s nothing new to report at this time,” said KCSO Lt. Earl Smith, who is in charge of investigating the murder of four members of the Careaga family last February. “We still have detectives working on it full-time,” Smith said.

Smith said the number of investigators depends on the number of leads and what needs to be done at the time.

“We haven’t forgotten about it.”
