SUQUAMISH — Kitsap County Sheriff’s deputies are investigating the apparent accidental death of a Suquamish man Thursday, in the 19700 block of Soaring Eagle Place NE, off of NE Middle Street.

Sheriff’s deputies and officers from Suquamish Police Department went to the residence shortly after 5 p.m. after receiving a 9-1-1 call. Officers arrived to find a man pinned between a camper box and the side of his work shop/garage. One deputy and two Suquamish Police officers lifted the camper box up from the ground and a fourth officer pulled the man out from under the box.

North Kitsap Fire & Rescue medics arrived shortly afterward and pronounced the man dead. The man was identified as James A. Sergent, 61, sheriff’s spokesman Scott Wilson said.

“A preliminary analysis indicates that Sergent was attempting to move the camper box, previously removed from the bed of a pickup truck, to another section of his property,” Wilson wrote in a press release. “The camper box was raised on bottle jacks and positioned on top of large wood beams. An electric cable winch ‘come along’ device, with wire, chain and rope attached to a large-diameter tree, was being used to drag the camper box over the property utilizing four-inch diameter wood pieces under the beams to allow the camper box to roll over the ground.

“In placing the wood pieces under the beams, it appears that one or more of the bottle jacks used to lift the camper and beams tipped, pinning Sergent between the camper box and the side of the work shop.”

Following an autopsy, the Kitsap County Coroner will determine cause and manner of death, Wilson said.
