SUQUAMISH — The Kitsap County Sheriff’s office is investigating a shooting by Suquamish Police that injured two people in Suquamish Saturday night.
According to a Sheriff’s Office news release, Suquamish officers shot at a 33-year-old Suquamish man and a 27-year-old after the man struck two of the officers with a car.
The 33-year-old man suffered several gunshot wounds to the torso and was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center. He remained hospitalized in satisfactory condition Monday afternoon, according to the release.
The woman was taken to Harrison Medical Center for treatment of a minor arm injury and was released. Both officers also were taken to Harrison and have been released.
The incident began at 9:25 p.m. Saturday when three Suquamish Police officers responded to a 9-1-1 call reporting gunshots and yelling on the 6500 block of NE Nelson Street.
According to initial results from the Sheriff’s Office investigation, the officers tried to detain a group of people outside a house on the street. The 33-year-old man and 27-year-old woman got into a Chrysler Sebring. The man reversed the car up the driveway, striking one officer with the car’s bumper and running over another’s foot.
Two of the officers fired at the vehicle. The man was hit by bullets while the woman was struck by debris.
The vehicle left the scene and the man and woman apparently switched vehicles at a nearby residence and were going to seek medical attention but decided to turn themselves in instead.
“They realized that they wouldn’t make it to the hospital and, instead, pulled into the Suquamish police station for help,” the Sheriff’s Office release said.
Aid crews from North Kitsap Fire and Rescue gave initial treatment at the scene.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, the 33-year-old man has a lengthy criminal record that includes convictions for assault, burglary and possession of narcotics. He had an outstanding felony warrant for his arrest for escape from community custody, issued by the state Department of Corrections. The man is being guarded by a Corrections officer while he remains at Harborview. He will be booked into Kitsap County Jail after he is released from the hospital, according to the release.
The case will be forwarded to the Kitsap County Prosecutor’s Office for charging.
