CENTRAL KITSAP — Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office detectives are following up on numerous leads and are working to identify a suspect who shot and killed a 2-year-old boy and a 29-year-old woman at the Kariotis Mobile Home Park on March 28.
KCSO, Bremerton Police, and Washington State Patrol officers were at 3060 NE McWilliams Road in Central Kitsap north of Bremerton on March 28 to process the crime scene. The manager at the private property declined to allow press on the scene, but from the entrance to the mobile home park a KCSO “Major Crimes Unit” van, yellow police tape and several officers were visible.
Detectives said they were confident that the suspect was no longer in the mobile home park.
“We’re still trying to determine who the suspect is and what the motivation was,” KCSO Detective Lt. Earl Smith said.
The trouble began early that morning: Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to a report of gunshots heard at the mobile home park at 2:18 a.m.
“We got multiple calls about multiple gunshots being fired in the park,” Deputy Ken Dickinson said.
Smith said four people were inside the home when the shooter arrived: The 2-year-old boy, the 29-year-old woman, a male, and the mother of the 2-year-old.
“(The) mother and the 2-year-old were residents of that mobile home. The mother was trying to protect the 2-year-old as the 2-year-old was shot and killed,” Smith said.
“The mother and child moved into that residence approximately three weeks ago,” Smith said. “The female that was shot and killed was a roommate of the mother and the child.”
A third victim, a male, fled to his own home at the park after being shot. The male’s roommate then called 911.
KCSO deputies and officers from Bremerton Police Department arrived on scene at 2:24 a.m. The woman was declared dead at the scene while the child was transported to Harrison Medical Center where he died.
The 2-year-old victim was identified as Kaden Lum.
The 29-year-old woman was identified as Heather Kelso, 29, of Bremerton. Kelso was an employee of Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and had resided at the Kariotis Mobile Home Park residence for the last three years.
Kelso’s body has been removed from the crime scene and an autopsy is scheduled for both shooting victims on Monday.
The male was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. Detectives are at the hospital but have yet to be able to speak him yet due to his medical condition.
“We’re not getting the impression he’s a suspect,” Dickinson said of the male.
The relationship between the three victims is still being determined.
Two other homes in the area were struck by errant gunfire. No injuries were reported from the errant shots.
Detectives obtained a search warrant to search the residence where the homicides occurred, and also to search the residence of the male who had been shot.
Dickinson was not sure what type of firearm was used.
Officers had investigated a man in Port Orchard for a possible connection to the shootings. That man was cooperative, Smith said. Officers interviewed the man and released him.
The investigation is in its early stages. Detectives from the Washington State Patrol Crime Scene Response Team are assisting with the investigation.
Access to and from the mobile home park is being restricted at this time. Earlier in the day, officers had been checking the identity of anyone entering or leaving the mobile home park.
Because of the shootings, the emergency department at Harrison Medical Center in Bremerton was on lock-down for about four hours at the request of law enforcement, Scott Thompson of CHI Franciscan said. The lockdown was lifted around 8 a.m.
Detectives are completing their processing of the crime scene and will continue following leads through the night. Anyone with information about this investigation is encouraged to call 9-1-1.
