SILVERDALE — An assistant Cub Scout master for Silverdale Cub Scout Pack #4544 was charged with theft in the first degree for allegedly using a Scout debit card to make nearly $8,000 in unauthorized purchases over four months.
Michael David Cain, 35, of Bremerton, was charged with theft in the first degree. Cain allegedly took nearly $8,000 from a bank account that he was a signatory on.
Another man discovered the theft April 26 after the pack switched bank accounts and the statements were mailed to the pack treasurer, according to court documents.
The money was taken between Dec. 24, 2015 and March 18, 2016. Most transactions were point-of-sale debit, but two were cash withdrawals for $1,500 each.
Cain also allegedly used the card to rent two vehicles for $761.
Other charges were made for restaurant purchases, discount store purchases, to a cable television provider and others.
The bank account became overdrawn and was frozen.
Deputies arrested Cain as he was driving away from his home May 1. Cain told the deputy that his business card was identical to the Scout card, and that he used the Scout card by mistake.
The deputy examined both cards and confirmed they appeared identical in color and design and only differed by the account number and expiration date.
Cain said he realized he used the wrong card and told the treasurer to let him know how much he owed the pack, which he thought was $500. Cain said the treasurer never let him know how much he owned, so he did not pay it back.
Cain said $1,500 withdrawals were used for housing payments.
The deputy said he could understand how someone might make a few mistaken purchases with the scout card, but that nearly $8,000 over four months was excessive.
Bail was set at $5,000.
